Herb what a great picture, I never saw that, but my Herb saw it at your folks house when we visited them in South Carolina. We would like a copy too. Gail
Mom (April) and I were trying to figure out the relationship we have to each person in the pictures. Herb if you could tell me their relationship to you than I could figure it out. Mom's all confused.
The fellow on the left is Herbert Neuhaus: ***father to Herb Neuhaus Sr (and Charlie, Albert and Eddie), ***grandfather to the generation that includes me and April, ***great-grandfather to Cathy's generation.
He died when my father(Charlie) was only about 15 years old so not many knew him except maybe Marion. I do not know how he died...anyone have that story?
The next two fellows are Herbert's brothers, so my great-uncles and probably Cathy's great-great-uncles. I knew those guys as a boy. Frank died around 1981 as an old man.
And Frederick is the father of all three, so just a one more 'great.'
We believe that Frederick and and his older brother Frank (not in the photo) were born in the US. Obviously that saw is a very dangerous thing. Frank (in the photo) got caught in the belt and nearly killed.
That picture came threw great, I put it in a folder and it printed out real nice. Thanks. My Herb asked if you or your Mom have a picture of all 12 of the brothers? We will also ask Mom if she knows anything about Grandfather Neuhaus . Gail
Hi Herb, I was Right about who was who in the picture but I am confused about Albert. I knew Grandmom had a brother Albert but I didn't realize my Father had 2 Uncle Alberts, one related to each his Mother & Father. I remember Gram,She was a really nice person and made us feel special. She was sick and spent most of her time in bed looking out the window. Is Frank the one that was married to Louise Neuhaus? No, he couldn't have been,he had to have been the Father of that part of the family. She did a lot of volunteer work with the veterns. I don't remember how "Grandfather" died but I do know he was a Bicycle racer. We'll have to get Mom (Marion) to tell us the details. Looking forward to seeing you April
Herb, again, thanks for posting the picture. It's wonderful. The information I have on the family doesn't match what you've given about the picture. Since I got my information from Marion at various times, I'm guessing that I'm probably the one who is wrong. Would you and/or Aunt Kay be interested in updating the family tree site? I'll be glad to give you the necessary admin priviledges. I'd love to know more about our family history -- especially if it were true! (Although some of the family fables are fun, too!)
Sandi – we are all so proud that you got the ball rolling! Good Job! Let’s don’t worry about right and wrong. Let’s worry about collecting, preserving and sharing. And EVERYONE has SOMETHING to share. I hope you will all open those dusty boxes of photos or write down a few family stories.
My Mom(Kay) has accumulated a lot of information and she’s asked me to help her share it. So Sandi – yes, please, I’d love to contribute what we have. Give me access to the family tree site and I’ll put in what we have.
This will make you chuckle…she’s worried that you’ll think she’s being a "know-it-all!" A know-it-all? In the Neuhaus family? Impossible!!!
I have found that for some reason, there is very little in the way of documentation for Neuhaus genealogy. Maybe earlier generations did not value the family history as we do now. A little story will make my point.
After Uncle Frank had died, Aunt Gertie (Gertrude - Frank's wife) was moving to my parents’ home. While I was helping clean out the old house I came across a pile of old papers from the family business. I found old invoices and bills, a few "demand for payment" letters (nope—bill collectors are nothing new!), and some records that looked like a series of back-and-forth law suits over who owed what to whom.
When Aunt Gertie saw what I had found she was absolutely horrified and actually pulled the papers from my hand and started to tear them up! She said, “No one cares about THAT stuff anymore!” With all due respect, she was wrong. I know I cared.
And I know you all do as well. We must capture as much information as we can before it is lost forever – like those papers Aunt Gertie shredded. Half of the fun is knowing something about our heritage- the good, the bad and the fables. The other half the fun is sorting it all out.
Gail: The saw mill photo is about the best of what I have so I don’t know about a picture of all 12 of the brothers – but I’ll check.
April: I don’t know about you but I get easily confused. Since all the good names were used over and over (Herbert, Albert, Charles, Frederick) you really need a scorecard to keep the players straight!
By Gandmom, I take it you mean your father’s mother Agnes Baronoski. Right? And you say she had a brother Albert? Mom(Kay) says Agnes had a brother everyone called “Unc” (short for uncle) but cannot recall his name. I think he was also a roofer and had only one leg. (Are these crazy sentences, or what?). WHAt else do you remember about our Grandmother – Agnes?
Frank in the picture was married to Gertrude (Gertie) and had no children. I’ll have to check to who Louise is.
According to my Mom(Kay) who never met Herbert Neuhaus, he died quickly of an illness. She thinks diabetes. Got to get Aunt Marion’s recollection because he was alive when she married.
If anyone is willing to email or snail mail family stories, I'm more then willing to put them together to make a memory book. Does anyone remember the one we did for Gramma & Grampop's 50th anniversary?
Better yet, post the stories here on the site for everyone to see, rather than just sending them to Cathy. Cathy, you can grab them off the site, or I'll grab them for you if you need help with it, to make the book. It's a great idea!
It is a great Idea, the stories. I wish I had written down things when my memory was better.I will get Granny (Marion ) over here and get some first hand info for this site. Gail
